Beauty

Beauty is one of the world's most resilient and aspirational consumer categories - spanning skincare, haircare, fragrance, cosmetics and personal grooming. Spending grows across income levels and regions, but the dynamics vary enormously by market, demographic and segment.

The category

From first-time adoption to premiumisation

In emerging economies, beauty growth comes from first-time product adoption as incomes rise and routines become more sophisticated. In mature markets it comes from premiumisation and specialised products. Income, culture, age and gender all pull in different directions - which is why one national average is never enough.

While younger consumers shape trends through digital culture and fast product adoption, unexpected growth among older age groups is reshaping the category. Ageing populations in key markets are driving demand for advanced skincare, wellness services and age-inclusive beauty - a broader shift toward longevity-focused consumption.

Key trends shaping the category

The affluent opportunity

661 million affluent consumers spend USD 647 a year on beauty on average, while a full luxury beauty bundle costs USD 5,420. That gap between current and potential spend is the central strategic question for premium and prestige brands.

A shifting geographic centre of gravity

New York, Tokyo, London, Paris and Seoul keep growing, but the fastest absolute growth through 2030 is concentrating in Jakarta, Hong Kong and São Paulo, where affluent populations are expanding their beauty routines rapidly.

Demographics are not uniform

Age, gender, nationality and household structure produce very different spending patterns inside the same income bracket. Baby Boomers remain an underestimated force in prestige beauty. In India, men consistently outspend women on fragrance.
